ADL Condemns Murder of Ugandan Activist
ADL sent the following letters to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Executive Director of UNAIDS Michel Sidibé, expressing support for their condemnations of the murder of Ugandan rights activist David Kato, and their call for Ugandan authorities to find those responsible and protect the country’s LGBT community. ADL said, “We hope the international community will turn this heinous act into an opportunity to galvanize against the ongoing persecution of the LGBT community in Uganda, embodied in Uganda’s law criminalizing homosexuality, and a platform to speak out against the ongoing discrimination against the LGBT community throughout the world.”

Dear Madam Secretary:
We are writing to express our deep appreciation for your recent condemnation of the murder of Mr. David Kato an incredible defender of human rights in Uganda and your call for the Ugandan authorities to thoroughly investigate his death.
As you said, Mr. Kato’s commitment to the LGBT community in Uganda was truly “heroic,” as he stood up against government officials and the pervasive prejudice in the country. In the face of this bigotry and hatred, Mr. Kato worked tirelessly for the rights of those who were targeted, empowering them with his dedication. We join you in honoring him as a brave and outstanding defender of human rights and condemning his horrific murder by bigoted individuals.
Madam Secretary, the Anti-Defamation League has been at the forefront of the global fight against hatred and intolerance since 1913 and we are thankful for the State Department’s continued denouncement of the homophobia and bigotry in Uganda.
We look forward to continuing to work with you toward a most just and tolerant world.

Dear Mr. Sidibé
We are writing to express our support for your recent condemnation of David Kato’s murder and your call for the Ugandan authorities to thoroughly investigate his death and protect the LGBT community in Uganda.
We are troubled by the environment of prejudice against homosexuals in Uganda and stand with you in denouncing the horrific murder of Mr. Kato. Such bigoted crimes, targeting individuals based on their race, sexual orientation, gender or religion, must be condemned in all public forums and the perpetrators brought to justice. In this light we note Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s repeated criticism of Uganda’s law criminalizing homosexuality and his support for efforts to overturn the hateful legislation.
Mr. Sidibé, the Anti-Defamation League has been at the forefront of the global fight against hatred and intolerance since 1913 and we are thankful that individuals, such as you, join us in taking a stand against all forms of prejudice.
