ADL Statement Regarding Shooting in Middletown, CT

Update (May 8, 2009): The shooting suspect, Stephen Morgan, has surrendered to law enforcement.

__________

New Haven, CT, May 7, 2009 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has been informed by law enforcement that the suspect in the shooting near Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, identified as Stephen Morgan, expressed threats in his personal journal toward Wesleyan and its Jewish students.

At this time there is no specific threat against any Jewish institution or person.  Nevertheless, we recommend that Jewish institutions take this opportunity to review their security procedures and exercise appropriate caution.  Moreover, we are confident that local and federal law enforcement are handling this matter professionally and is giving it the urgent attention it deserves.

In light of this event, ADL, an expert in security for Jewish institutions, has shared security resources with the Jewish community in Connecticut.

The League's comprehensive security manual and other information is available online at www.adl.org/security.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
