ADL Decries 5 Anti-Semitic Acts Targeting 3 Jewish Institutions at Indiana University

Chicago, IL, December 1, 2010 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) condemns the 5 separate incidents targeting 3 Jewish institutions located at Indiana University in Bloomington

On November 23rd, a limestone rock was thrown at the Chabad House Jewish Student Center.  Later that day, a second rock was thrown through the window of an apartment above the Chabad house, putting a large hole through the dry wall, nearly hitting a student.  Shortly thereafter another rock was thrown at the staff directory glass display case at Goodbody hall, home of the Jewish Studies program.

On Monday November 27th, eight Hebrew texts were found to be separately defaced with urine.  Following this incident another rock was thrown through the Helene G. Simon Hillel Center's kitchen window.

"We deplore these despicable and cowardly acts of anti-Semitism which deeply impacts the entire Jewish community" said Lonnie Nasatir, ADL Regional Director.  "These intolerable acts were perpetrated by individual(s) who have complete disregard for sacred Jewish institutions.  We applaud local law enforcement for taking these incidents seriously and treating it them as hate crimes, and we hope that the perpetrator(s) will be found and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

The League is working closely with the University, local law enforcement, the campus police, and the FBI as the investigation proceeds.

The University has done an exemplary job at publically deploring these acts and we hope they will continue to work with the campus community to ensure that these types of incidents are not tolerated.

ADL's experts are providing information and assistance to investigators working to solve the case and will be offering security training to the institutions targeted as well as the local area synagogue.
