ADL Condemns Menorah Desecration on Long Island

New York, NY, December 29, 2011 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today strongly condemned the desecration of a menorah at a Long Island home, which is the second such episode in Nassau County in recent weeks.

"We are deeply troubled by this despicable act of anti-Semitism— the destruction of a menorah on display during Hanukkah," said Ron Meier, ADL New York Regional Director. "A Jewish resident of Long Island encountered destruction and pain during this festive holiday of Hanukkah. A menorah is a symbol of Jewish faith, and the demolition of this one carries an underlying message of hate."

Earlier this week, on the seventh day of Hanukkah, a Plainview, Long Island resident found his menorah smashed on his front lawn. The menorah— which was constructed from PVC pipe, glue, cement and screws, and measured approximately five feet tall and five feet wide— has been displayed outside his home during Hanukkah for the past ten years.

On December 10, a town menorah was also found defaced in Westbury, Long Island.

ADL has been in contact and is working closely with local law enforcement officials and the victim in response to the incident.
