ADL Praises France For Punishing Egyptian TV's Anti-Semitism
New York, NY, April 9, 2010 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today praised the decision by a French government agency to instruct the French satellite TV carrier, Eutelsat, to stop transmitting an Egyptian channel based on the blatantly anti-Semitic content of its programming.
In its decision the French State Audiovisual Council (CSA) cited an Oct. 31, 2009 program on the Egyptian TV channel Al Rahma showing Jews in a "demonizing and degrading fashion," which contravened French law against "incitement to hatred or violence based on religion or nationality."
"The Egyptian media has no shame when it comes to anti-Semitic media portrayals of Jews. Al Rahma has a long history of spreading the most vile anti-Semitic incitement, and the decision taken by France is an important step in combating it," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director.
"We urge the European Union to follow the French lead and expand the ban to all member states, just as EU regulators did after France took action against Al Manar, Hezbollah's media arm," Mr. Foxman added.
The Al Rahma broadcast featured Egyptian cleric Hazem Shuman, making the following statements about Jews:
• "Your turn has come at last, you offspring of apes and pigs, you most accursed creatures created by Allah, you people who have harmed the Prophet again and again."
• "It has been proven that the Jews are like a cancer – if they are not removed from the body of the nation, they will kill the entire nation."
• "I have a message for every Jew on the face of the earth. The army of Muhammad will return. Oh offspring of apes and pigs, the day of vengeance is nearing. Oh most accursed creatures created by Allah, those who swore before the Prophet Muhammad to die are returning. Wait for us and you will see, you most accursed creatures." (Translation by MEMRI)
ADL has monitored programs broadcast by Al Rahma for some time. The October 31, 2009 program is only one of many which poison the Egyptian people with descriptions of Jews as "devils in human form" and in other dehumanizing terms. Al Rahma broadcasts often justify murdering Jews and have blamed the Holocaust on Jewish "corruption."
