ADL Welcomes Presbyterians Overturning Divestment Against Israel Resolution
New York, NY, June 21, 2006 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) welcomed the Presbyterian Church USA (PCUSA) General Assembly resolution, known as an overture, that overturns the 2004 GA one which targeted Israel for "phased, selective divestment."
Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement:
The PCUSA adoption of a new overture that overturns one on the books targeting Israel for divestment is welcomed. We appreciate the church's acknowledgement that the unbalanced 2004 overture caused 'hurt and misunderstanding among many members of the Jewish community and within our Presbyterian communion.'
The new overture, which directs the church to analyze its financial investments under its traditional process and not single out Israel, demonstrates the continued importance of interfaith dialogue in resolving problems between faith groups.
However, there still remain outstanding issues pertaining to the Israeli-Palestinian situation that separate the PCUSA and the Jewish community which need resolution.
The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
