Update: Gov. Chris Christie vetoed the bill that would legalize same-sex marriage on Feb. 17, 2012.
New York, NY, February 16, 2012 ... The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) hailed today's passage by the New Jersey Legislature of a bill recognizing marriages between same-sex couples and urged Governor Christie to reconsider his position on this issue. The bill now awaits Governor Christie's signature to become law but he has declared his intention to veto it.
ADL issued the following statement:
This vote by the New Jersey Legislature represents a significant step forward in securing individual liberty and freedom from all forms of discrimination for New Jersey residents.
Everyone should be entitled to the same rights, protections and benefits, regardless of their sexual orientation, including the right of same-sex couples to marry. The legislature's vote is an affirmation of equal protection for all and we welcome this important statement.
We hope that Governor Christie will sign the bill and end the discrimination still faced by same-sex couples from hospitals, insurers and employers.
