New York, NY, September 26, 2005 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today said the hate mail directed at New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter and others, "is a painful reminder that hate and racism are alive, and that nobody is immune."

Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement:

The hate mail that has targeted Derek Jeter and other prominent Americans in interracial marriages or relationships is a stark and painful reminder that hate and racism are alive and well in America, and that nobody is immune.  Celebrity status does not immunize anyone from the poisonous arrows of hate.

 

Because words of hate are frequently followed by deeds, they cannot be ignored, but must be rejected.  It is important to expose the hate, challenge it, and speak out against it, so that those who engage in it will get the message that they are alone and isolated.
