ADL Condemns Nevada Pastor's Bigoted Remarks About Mormonism
Las Vegas, NV, October 8, 2010 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today condemned remarks by Nevada pastor John Reed demonizing the Mormon faith, calling his words "inappropriate and highly offensive."
In a recent interview, the Reno pastor and leader of the Sonrise Church referred to the Mormon faith as a cult with "kooky" beliefs and claimed the church uses a "hit squad" to kill its foes.
Phyllis Friedman, ADL Nevada Regional Director, issued the following statement:
The quotes attributed to Pastor John Reed regarding the Mormon religion are inappropriate and highly offensive. Referring to Mormonism as a "cult" with "kooky beliefs" and saying that the Mormon Church has "hit squads" and "does illegal things" exceeds the bounds of acceptable public discourse.
Pastor Reed's bigoted remarks are an affront to the Mormon faith and the broader community. His words are particularly abhorrent coming from a man of faith and a high profile member of the community. He should apologize immediately for the pain he has caused to the Mormon community. We hope that all Nevadans will reject such outrageous appeals to bigotry and prejudice.
