Miami-Dade Newborn Centers Get Free "All Kinds Of..." Diversity Board Books
Miami, FL, February 23, 2005 ... The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), The Early Childhood Initiative Foundation and the Miami-Dade Family Learning Partnership today announced a major early childhood education book and curriculum on diversity called "All Kinds of…Todo Tipo De…Tout Kalite…".
The book, a partnership between ADL and two major organizations in the Miami-Dade early childhood arena, will be given free to every new parent in the community via all 13 birthing hospitals and nine birthing centers. It's designed as a baby's first book, encouraging parents to read with their children from the earliest months; it also helps families learn to recognize and respect the differences and similarities that human beings have in common. More than 32,000 children are born every year in Miami-Dade County, and up to a third of them start school with significant deficits in cognitive, social and/or emotional growth.
The new book is one element in a community-wide "school readiness" initiative that is increasingly seen nationally as a model approach to helping children be ready and eager to learn when they reach formal school. Key partners in this initiative are The Early Childhood Initiative Foundation, focused on convening people and resources for this initiative, and the Family Learning Partnership, which focuses on parent skill-building and literacy. "All Kinds Of…," the latest ADL publication helping children and adults learn to reject bias and embrace diversity, is being published in English, Spanish and Haitian-Creole; this board book was created for parents and caregivers to use with their young children to help them develop comfort with diversity.
A trilingual companion activity guide, All Kinds Of…Activity Guide/Curriculum Framework, and the Teach More/Love More website, features a shared reading activity and follow-up activities to support young children's exploration of the world around us.
The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
