New York, NY, November 30, 2011 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today welcomed an apology from a television network based in Mumbai, India for using the name "Hitler" in the title of a new soap opera.

Attorneys for Zee TV, a division of Zee Entertainment Enterprises, Limited of Mumbai, formally notified ADL yesterday that the network is in the process of renaming the program in response to the League's concerns that the use of the Nazi dictator's name in the title was inappropriate and offensive to Jews and Holocaust survivors.  The original title -- "Hitler Didi" -- referred to the program's main protagonist, an aunt who takes a no-nonsense attitude with her family.

"The use of the name Hitler was inappropriate and tone-deaf," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director and a Holocaust survivor.  "We welcome Zee TV's decision to rename the show so that it no longer invokes the name Hitler.  The network heard our concerns, and acted responsibly."

"Hitler Didi," which roughly translated means "Auntie Hitler" in English, premiered in India on November 7 and airs five days a week on Zee TV.  It also reportedly airs on the network's affiliates abroad, including in the United States.

ADL has fielded numerous complaints about the title and its use in promotional videos on the Internet since the show's premiere.  The League wrote to network executives on November 17, calling on them to reconsider the choice of title and rename the show.
