New York, NY, May 2, 2012 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today welcomed the decision by the Metropolitan Museum of Art to amend its exhibit on Gertrude Stein's art collection to include mention of Stein's Nazi sympathies.

The exhibit, called "The Steins Collect," had originally omitted any mention of Stein's well-known anti-Semitic and pro-Hitler ideology -- ideas that permitted her to remain in Vichy France and keep her famous art collection.

"We welcome the decision by The Met to include information on Gertrude Stein's collaborationist past and her support for Hitler," said Ron Meier, ADL New York Regional Director.  "Her troubling ideology was inextricably linked to her art collection, and therefore it is appropriate to make reference to it."

Historians have noted that Stein was a supporter of the Vichy regime, and in 1938 she nominated Adolf Hitler as a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize.
