ADL Commends Rabbi Shlomo Aviner's Stance on Civil Disobedience in Israel
Jerusalem, March 1, 2005...The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has commended the head of the Ateret Cohanim Yeshiva, Rabbi Shlomo Aviner, for his public declaration against calling for Israel Defense Forces soldiers to disobey orders during the upcoming disengagement from Gaza. In a letter to Rabbi Aviner, ADL National Director Abraham H. Foxman wrote:
I am writing to commend you for your recent article calling on Israel Defense Forces soldiers not to disobey evacuation orders during the upcoming disengagement operation. Due to your great stature and the respect you garner, your words are immensely important for the majority of IDF soldiers and members of the public to hear--both religious and secular--who believe that mass refusal of orders is a recipe for disaster which can fracture Israeli society as well as am Israel in unforeseen ways.
The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
