Swedish Newspaper's Charge Of Organ Harvesting By Israeli Soldiers 'Irresponsible And Shocking'
New York, NY, August 19, 2009 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) condemned as "irresponsible and shocking" an article in the Swedish daily newspaper, Aftonbladet, that charged Israeli soldiers with kidnapping Palestinians in order to harvest their organs.
Today, the League lodged a complaint with the Swedish embassy in Washington, D.C.
The August 17 article by Donald Boström, titled "They plunder the organs of our sons," linked the allegations of organ harvesting by the Israeli Army to an actual case currently being investigated in New Jersey.
"This is a shocking case of irresponsible journalism, where allegations are blatantly fabricated and trumped up for no other reason but to demonize and vilify the State of Israel," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "If Mr. Boström had read his history, he might have taken pause before writing such ugly, hateful words, which are the playthings of bigots and anti-Semites, not journalists."
"Such unfounded rumors -- of Jews 'poisoning the wells' and carrying out acts of ritual murder -- have been in the playbook of anti-Semites through the centuries, and continue to be believed in parts of the Arab world and elsewhere to this day. What could Mr. Boström and the editors who ushered this article into print have been thinking?"
In a letter of complaint to Jonas Hafström, the Swedish Ambassador to the United States, the League called on the government to "immediately condemn the allegations," and to make clear that it considers the article "unfounded and repugnant."
"This article … represents nothing less than a base recycling of the medieval blood libel in which Jews were charged with killing Christian children for their alleged ritual use," the letter stated. "That Mr. Böstrom links these allegations to an actual case currently being investigated in New Jersey is, at best, irresponsible journalism and certainly does not add any veracity to his blatant fabrications."
