ADL Welcomes Israeli Investigation into Gaza Flotilla Affair
New York, NY, June 14, 2010 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today welcomed the government of Israel’s establishment of a panel to investigate the May 31 Gaza flotilla incident, saying it should "silence the biased rush to judgment against Israel."
The Israel Defense Forces is also conducting its own internal investigation into the operation, to examine "the outcomes and lessons learned from the operation."
Robert G. Sugarman, ADL National Chair, and Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director issued the following statement:
The government of Israel’s establishment of an investigative committee, comprised of esteemed Israeli legal and academic figures and two non-Israeli world renowned experts in international law as observers, is welcome and demonstrates Israel’s commitment to examining the facts relating to the flotilla incident in a transparent and responsible process.
This independent investigation, along with a previously announced IDF investigation, should silence the biased rush to judgment against Israel, as well as those who have sought to create another Goldstone-like commission where Israel’s guilt would be established prior to an examination of the facts.
On June 14, ADL ran an advertisement in The New York Times in an effort to raise awareness of facts about the “Free Gaza” flotilla, including the fact that a major organizer and funder of the flotilla, the Turkish group Insani Yardim Vakfi (IHH), is a significant fundraiser for Hamas, and that activists on the flotilla ship Mavi Marmara were committed to a violent confrontation with the Israeli navy.
