ADL Commends California Insurance Commissioner Poizner for Filing a Lawsuit to Stop Insurers from Investing In Iran
San Francisco, CA., November 9, 2010 ... The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) commends California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner for asserting his right to stop California-licensed insurers from investing in Iran by filing a lawsuit in response to a reported industry-supported effort to prevent him from doing so.
ADL supports Commissioner Poizner's morally responsible actions to isolate the Iranian regime, which has a rich track record of trampling human rights, including, but not limited to, suppressing religious freedom, freedom of speech, and women's and minority rights; and engaging in blatant Holocaust denial and other expressions of anti-Semitism. The Iranian government has also long ignored the will of the international community by continuing to pursue a menacing program of nuclear weapons development in violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions.
The Commissioner's efforts are in line with the actions of U.S., Britain, China, France, and Russia who have all imposed sanctions on the Iranian government. The European Union also just approved new sanctions against Iran, and the California Legislature also has just passed legislation barring contracts between California and companies doing business with Iran's energy sector. ADL stands in solidarity with Commissioner Poizner with this latest attempt to convince the Iranian leaders to change their ways.
