ADL Condemns the Vandalizing of Holy Places in Jaffa

Jerusalem, October 9, 2011… The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) strongly condemns the desecration of both the Christian and Muslim cemeteries in Jaffa, and the Molotov cocktail hurled at a synagogue. While the identity of the perpetrators remains unclear (according to media reports), it does not diminish the gravity of the actions.

ADL's Israel Office issued the following statement:

ADL condemns the vandalizing of the cemeteries and the synagogue in Jaffa, and deems them as hate crimes. Respect to other religions in general, and to holy places in particular, are of the fundamentals of Israeli social fabric. Such actions targeting holy places in a mixed city are aimed at destabilizing the balance between the different groups in the city.

The city of Jaffa enjoys co-existence that is a model for different communities living closely with dialogue between all groups in the society and mutual respect. We call upon all citizens to show restraint and avoid retaliations that could further escalate the situation. We are certain that the Israel Police will make every effort to find those responsible.
