ADL Condemns Harassment Of Muslims In Greece

New York, NY, November 16, 2010 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today condemned the harassment of Muslims who had gathered to pray and celebrate Eid al-Adha on a central square in Athens, Greece.

According to reports, members of the far-right Chrysi Avgi movement and dozens of local residents threw eggs and leaflets with images of pigs, while yelling anti-Muslim epithets.

"Whenever religious bigotry rears its ugly head against Muslims or any religious group, we must speak out," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director.  "The Greek government and all sectors of Greek society must use the tools at their disposal to combat violent extremism."

Chrysi Avgi, well-known for its racism and violence, was politically marginalized until its candidate won a seat on the Athens municipal council just nine days ago.
