ADL Mourns Passing of Suffolk County Police Detective Sergeant Robert Reecks

New York, NY, August 9, 2011 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) joins the Suffolk County Police Department in mourning the passing of Detective Sergeant Robert Reecks, who died in a car accident on August 6.

John B. Harris, ADL New York Regional Board Chair, and Ron Meier, ADL New York Regional Director, issued the following statement:

We mourn the passing of Detective Sergeant Robert Reecks, a friend and a defender of our nation's democratic values who was deeply committed to justice and fair treatment for all.

For 13 years Det. Sgt. Reecks commanded the Suffolk County Police Department's Bias Crimes Unit.  His was a voice of principle and reason.

Det. Sgt. Reecks understood the devastating impact of hate crimes and the critical role played by law enforcement to deter and counteract hate-motivated crime.   He was an ally against racism, anti-Semitism, prejudice and bigotry of all types.  He was a dedicated partner in our efforts.

We extend our sincere condolences to the Reecks family and hope they will take comfort from his legacy of good works.
