ADL Statement on the Death of Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist
New York, NY, September 6, 2005 … The passing of United States Chief Justice William Rehnquist marks the end of an era. Throughout his more than three decades on the Court, and his 19 years as Chief Justice, he was a dedicated public servant. Although we did not always agree with his rulings, we salute his commitment to the institution of the Court, to the federal judiciary, and to our nation.
President Bush now has the rare opportunity to fill another vacancy on the Court at the same time. His choices will be among the most important decisions of his Presidency, and will have a lasting impact on all Americans. It is a profoundly significant moment in American history, and we look to both the President and Senate to rise above partisan politics to fulfill their constitutional responsibilities.
