New York, NY, September 1, 2011 … In commemoration of the 10^th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has put together an assessment of a range of issues that came into focus in the aftermath of the attacks -- from the balance between security and civil liberties, to the threat of homegrown extremism, the spread of anti-Semitic conspiracy theories and the rise of anti-Muslim bigotry.

"In the ten years since the 9/11 attacks, our country has experienced a number of changes that have affected our domestic and foreign policies, our sense of security and our identity as a nation," said Robert G. Sugarman, ADL National Chair.  "The Anti-Defamation League has been at the forefront of dealing with many of the issues that have engaged the country since 9/11, and we continue to carefully monitor these issues and to speak out and take action whenever necessary." 

"Our efforts post-9/11 have ranged from exposing and combating homegrown extremism and terrorism to ensuring that the government balances security with the protection of civil liberties," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director.  "We have had to confront the worldwide proliferation of anti-Semitic conspiracy theories blaming Jews or Israel for carrying out the 9/11 attacks, and the ugliness of increased bigotry against the Muslim-American community."

ADL's online assessment of the decade since 9/11 looks at a number of topics and how ADL and the nation responded to these challenges.  The trends include:

·  Anti-Semitic 9/11 Conspiracy Theories 10 Years Later.  The anti-Semitic faction of those promoting 9/11 conspiracy theories is small yet vocal and pervasive, particularly on the Internet.

·  Post-9/11 Islamic Extremism in the U.S.  A growing number of American citizens and residents motivated by ideologies of extreme intolerance have been involved in terrorist plots.

·  Muslim Extremists Targeting Jews after 9/11.  Since the 9/11 attacks, a significant number of terror plots in the U.S. have targeted Jewish institutions or were fueled by hatred of Jews and Israel.

·  Homegrown Extremism after 9/11.  Domestic terrorism remains a substantial threat, not just from domestic Muslim extremists but from white supremacists and anti-government extremists as well.

·Recalibrating the Balance between National Security and Civil Liberties.  While our government focuses on preventing terrorism and extremism on American soil, the protection of our civil liberties remains crucial.

·  Anti-Muslim Bigotry since 9/11.  A surge of anti-Muslim sentiment both on the fringes and in mainstream circles feeds on concerns about Islamic extremism and a conspiratorial view of Islam.

·  ADL and Law Enforcement: Fighting Terror Before 9/11 and Beyond.  Since 9/11, the scale of ADL's work with law enforcement has increased significantly.
