ADL Calls On U.S., France, Germany And U.K. To 'Deliver On Promise' For Tough Iran Sanctions

New York, NY, November 10, 2011 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today called on the United States, France, Germany and the United Kingdom to "deliver on their promises" to prevent Iran from attaining a nuclear weapons capability, following the International Atomic Energy Agency report confirming that Iran is moving ever closer to achieving it.

In letters sent to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the European foreign ministers of the "P-5+1" group, the international community's interlocutors with Iran on the nuclear issue, ADL said coordinated sanctions by the U.S., E.U. and likeminded countries should be aimed at Iran's oil exports, "the regime's economic lifeblood."

"We urge you to lead a coalition of responsible countries to implement what you called for 18 months ago: 'crippling' sanctions," wrote Robert G. Sugarman, ADL National Chair and Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, in a letter to Secretary Clinton.  "Unless sanctions are effective enough to coerce Iran to verifiably end its nuclear weapons program, the international community will have abdicated its responsibility to exhaust non-military options."

The League noted that the U.S., France, Germany and the U.K. have each stated in one form or another that a nuclear-armed Iran will not be allowed.

"Now is the time to deliver on that promise with sanctions that will force the Iranian regime to verifiably end its nuclear weapons program or face its own demise," wrote Messrs. Sugarman and Foxman.
