ADL Troubled by U.N. Participation in "One-Sided" Middle East Conference on Jerusalem

New York, NY, February 28, 2012 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today expressed dismay that U.N. officials, including the U.N. Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, attended The International Conference for the Defense of Jerusalem taking place in Doha, Qatar, a one-sided conference on the status of Jerusalem that included discussion of an Arab “rescue” of the city from alleged Israeli plans to “Judaize” Jerusalem.

“We are extremely troubled by the U.N.’s participation in a conference whose goal was not to discuss ways to promote peace and reconciliation between Israel and the Palestinians, or to brainstorm solutions for the future of the Jerusalem,” said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. “Rather this conference, attended by prominent U.N. diplomats who work on the peace process, promoted alleged violations by Israel regarding Jerusalem and Arab plans to ‘rescue Jerusalem.’ The U.N.’s participation in such a blatantly one-sided conference severely undermines its role in the Quartet’s Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.”

In a letter to U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, ADL said that it was disturbed by his decision to convey a message to the biased conference, and by the participation of U.N. officials.

Robert Serry, the U.N. Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process; the U.N. Secretary-General’s Representative to the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Palestinian Authority; the U.N. Secretary-General’s Envoy to the Quartet; and other U.N. personnel attended the conference Feb. 26-28.

The conference was called by the Arab League and hosted by the State of Qatar.
