Violence in Colorado Another Manifestation of Hate
New York, New York, April 21, 1999 ... The Anti-Defamation
League (ADL) today said the shooting in Littleton, Colo., is another
unfortunate event in which hate was a factor.
"The tragedy at Columbine High School in Littleton,
Colorado, is a grim reminder of how hate can provoke violence
against the innocent," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National
Director. "The hate quotient in school violence must be
addressed immediately and seriously."
Perpetrated on the anniversary of Hitler's birthday, the
bloodshed in Colorado comes in the wake of a rash of school
shootings involving disaffected youth and guns. The violence, Mr.
Foxman noted, "is a poignant reminder of how hate and
intolerance can lead to tragedy devastating a community. It looks
like Hitler and hate may have claimed some more innocent
victims."
Mr. Foxman said, "These unfortunate deaths are the strongest
indication yet that school violence must be addressed as an element
of hate crimes. We have long pressed this issue with President
Clinton and law enforcement to sensitize them to this problem. Until
all states recognize the importance of hate crimes legislation, our
children are at risk of becoming the next victims."
