This Land is My Land
by George Littlechild (Author, Illustrator)
|
2004 marks the beginning of the two-year bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition. While this anniversary represents a landmark event in U.S. history, it also signifies the start of a century of resettlement and violence against Native Americans. The Anti-Defamation League encourages educators to include Native American perspectives in their discussions about Lewis and Clark, and to teach about the history and contemporary lives of indigenous peoples. October and November are times when schools traditionally teach about Native culture through observances including Native American Awareness Month (October), Indigenous People’s Day (Oct. 11), Dia de la Raza (Oct. 12), and Thanksgiving (Nov. 25). A great way to pay tribute during these months and throughout the school year is to read This Land is My Land.
This book is a colorful gallery of 17 images created by artist George Littlechild, a member of the Plains Cree nation. Through mixed-media paintings and collage, the artist knits his personal stories together with the histories of his ancestors and other Native American peoples. The accompanying narratives reveal the feelings and symbols behind the art work, introduce the artist's guiding ancestors, and document the historic struggles of Native Americans.
