Extremist Meaning or Representation

RAC is most commonly used to describe the genre of white power/neo-Nazi hate music popular among racist skinheads and others in Europe and North America. Despite its name, RAC more often than not contains no references to Communism at all, but focuses on racism and anti-Semitism.

Background/History

In the 1980s, rock promoters in Great Britain put on a series of "Rock Against Racism" concerts. In response, various white supremacist bands, led by Ian Stuart and Skrewdriver, held "Rock Against Communism" concerts. The term eventually became used to describe the style of music, and later still came to be used as a general term for white power music. Many prefer RAC over other names used to describe such music, such as "hatecore," because the acronym does not make explicit the music's racist nature.
