I
was told that someone found me on the steps of a house on Ochota
in Warsaw. I was taken immediately to a home for children at 75
Nowogrodzka Street. I had a ribbon with a note attached on my
left hand. On this note was written: "Zofia Jadwiga, born
February 17, 1942. Do not give any information at any
time." My foster mother once told me that my real last name
was Wrzesinska, but she later said that this name was given to
all children of unknown parents.
In 1987 I spoke with
a nephew of my foster mother about my background. The only thing
I found out was that my "Uncle" Zbyszek knew my
biological parents before I ended up in the children's home. He
said, "You were supposed to be taken to the West, but there
wasn't enough time and then your parents were killed. Your
foster mother didn't know the details of your origin. She had no
idea that your biological parents were trying to save you."
It seems that my parents and my "uncle" belonged to
the same organization and that they were educated people. Also,
Uncle Zbyszek had many Jewish friends. He often said that the
only way to save Jewish children was to leave them in
orphanages.
None of the people
who knew about my heritage are alive today. At my adoption, I
was given the name Hanna Eulalia Broczek. Does anyone know
anything about me?
