Letter to President of Galician Parliament
|

Hon. Dolores Villarino Santiago
Parliament of Galicia, Spain
Dear Mrs. Villarino Santiago,
We write to urge you to introduce a resolution in the Parliament of Galicia to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust.
We understand that the Bloco Nacionalista Galego (BNG) prevented an earlier attempt to pass a resolution that was supported by both the Partido dos Socialistas de Galicia (PSdeG) and the Partido Popular de Galicia (PPdeG), because the BNG insisted that Israel be criticized in the same resolution. We note that your party and the PPdeG did not agree to this insulting proposition that denigrates the memory of the victims of the Holocaust and viciously slanders Israel by implicitly comparing the Jewish State to Nazi Germany. As a result, no resolution was passed.
Many national and regional parliaments, including the Spanish and Catalan parliaments, began to pass resolutions on the victims of the Holocaust only recently, and these acts of recognition were long overdue. However, what occurred in the Parliament of Galicia is unprecedented and was not an act of omission. A resolution to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust was defeated, and that result cannot be allowed to stand.
We urge you, as President of the Parliament, to lead the large majority that the PSdeG and PPdeG represent together, along with any decent deputies of the BNG who would defy their leadership, and bring the issue to a vote. Approving a Holocaust resolution will bring two appropriate results: honoring the victims and shaming those deputies who publicly oppose it.
We hope you will follow this course of action that will redeem the reputation of the Parliament of Galicia and embarrass instead only those individuals who truly deserve it.
Sincerely,
