Students, Catholic Educators Join ADL On March of the Living in Poland RULE

Posted: May 5, 2005

The Anti-Defamation League led a delegation of more than 170 college students, Catholic educators and others to the 2005 March of the Living at the site of the former Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp in Poland.

The members of the delegation included more than 75 Catholic school teachers from across the United States who have been involved in the League's Bearing Witness program, university students from across the country, Judaic Studies majors from City College of New York, only one of whom was Jewish, and Holocaust survivors and their generations. Thurbert Baker, the Attorney General of the State of Georgia, also joined the mission to Poland.

The delegation was led by Abraham H. Foxman, a Holocaust survivor and ADL National Director.

The group visited Poland during Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Memorial Day, and Jewish religious and historic sites in Krakow and Poland in addition to participating in the march. ADL leaders on the mission, including Mr. Foxman and Barbara B. Balser, ADL National Chair, met with various high-level government officials.

As part of the mission, the League honored Professor Gert Weisskirchen, a member of the Bundestag, Germany's Parliament, with ADL's Paul Ehrlich-Gunther K. Schwerin Human Rights Award for his efforts in promoting democracy, diversity, tolerance and Holocaust education. The award was presented at a Shabbat dinner attended by the 170 members of the delegation.

Following the Poland itinerary, members of the ADL delegation departed for Israel, where they attended celebrations for Yom Hazikaron, Israel Memorial Day and Yom Ha'Atzmaut, Israel Independence Day.
