ADL Letter about Anti-Jewish Statements by Greek Composer
November 13, 2003

Dear Mr. Ambassador:
We were deeply troubled to learn of the anti-Jewish statements made by Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis in the presence of the Greek Ministers of Education and Culture, in which he called the Jewish nation "the root of evil."
As you know, ADL has grown increasingly concerned in recent years by anti-Semitic sentiments in Greece.
We recognize that Government Spokesman Christos Protopappas issued a statement condemning Theodorakis' views and affirming Greece's commitment to defending its Jewish community.
We hope the Greek government will use this opportunity to educate and sensitize its people to the dangers of anti-Semitism.
