3 - The Israeli Position

The public Israeli position is that no existing settlements should be uprooted in a final status agreement. There is a tacit acknowledgment, however, that while the majority of settlements should be safeguarded, if in a final compromise it would be necessary to evacuate some of the more remote settlements, such arrangements could be permitted.

As final status negotiations approach, it remains uncertain what type of permanent compromise Israeli negotiators will be willing and able to make.
