Harrods to ADL: Israeli Products Were Reinstated

  January 22, 2002

Mr Abraham H Foxman
National Director Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith
823 United Nations Plaza
New York NY 10017 USA

Dear Mr Foxman,

Thank you for your letter of 18'h January : it is unfortunate that there has been such widespread and ill-informed mis-reporting of a boycott of Israeli goods by Harrods and please rest assured that I would never countenance any such action.

I fully endorse the promotion of free trade in the Middle. East and recognise its importance in stabilising the potentially explosive situation in the Middle East. It is, therefore, Harrods' policy to treat all of its customers equally regardless of race, nationality or creed.

Harrods will never be used to ignite economic warfare against Israel or any other nation and I have no intention of being used as a pawn in furtherance of any political agenda.

As a result, the handful of products which was removed from sale for a matter of days have now been re-instated and a press release has been issued in the form attached. I have also written to Ivor Levene of British-Israel Chamber of Commerce and attach a copy of my letter which should give you further comfort.

I hope this addresses your concerns.

  Yours Sincerely,

Mohammed Al Fayed
Chairman
Harrods Ltd
