ADL Letter to British Teachers Union

Dear Mr. Wilkin:

We write to protest the unconscionable resolution to blacklist Israeli scholars scheduled for consideration at your annual conference on May 27, 2006.

The boycott is an assault on academic freedom. In contrast to the rest of the Middle East, Israeli scholars are politically independent. They teach in universities that are world renowned as centers of research and academic excellence. And, in a place where Jewish and Arab students study and live together, Israeli scholars promote peace and coexistence.

A blacklist is not only deeply objectionable but undermines the prospects for peace in this troubled region. Moreover, by singling out Israel - the Jewish State and the only democracy in the Middle East - while ignoring massive human rights abuse elsewhere in the world, NATFHE is guilty of hypocrisy and double standards.

We know that there are many courageous British academics opposing the boycott. They understand that if the resolution is passed, British universities will stand accused of the worst kind of hypocrisy, intolerance and discrimination.
