ADL Letter to Selfridges, U.K., regarding decision to ban products marked "Made in Israel"
  December 27, 2001
Mr. Vittorio Radice
Chief Executive Officer
Selfridges
400 Oxford Street
London W1A 1AB
England

Dear Mr. Radice:

We were disturbed by Selfridges' recent announcement that it will be banning certain products from your stores bearing the "Made in Israel" label following protests by pro-Palestinian demonstrators.

Throughout the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, economic boycotts were a weapon employed against countries and companies engaging in business with Israel. The continued use or threat of boycotts against companies doing business with Israel is counterproductive to efforts at easing tensions in the region so that peace negotiations can resume.

The most productive demonstration of corporate support for Israeli-Palestinian reconciliation is through investment in Israel and the Arab world, not through the politicization of goods produced in the region.

It is unfortunate that Selfridges has allowed itself to be used as a tool to reignite economic warfare against Israel.

  Sincerely,

Abraham H. Foxman
National Director
