Israel Update:
Peres-Arafat Negotiate Cease-fire Understanding

At a late-night meeting at the Israel-Gaza border, Regional Cooperation Minister Shimon Peres and PA Chairman Yasir Arafat arrived at an agreement to quell the violence. Prime Minister Barak and Chairman Arafat are supposed to make formal announcements about the agreement simultaneously. It is uncertain how today's bombing in Mahane Yehuda will affect the announcement. The Prime Minister's office issued a statement outlining the agreement: "An understanding was reached between Israel and the Palestinian Authority concerning a number of steps, on the basis of the understandings of Sharm el-Sheikh, which are supposed to bring about a renewal of the security cooperation and a cessation of the violence and incitement." The Palestinian Authority statement said: "the Palestinian leadership asks our Palestinian people and all our national forces to forge a united stand and express ourselves peacefully in all circumstances in our national struggle."
