Members of Camarillo, California Racist Skinhead Group Arrested

Posted: August 13, 2008

Law enforcement officers in Camarillo have arrested three members of a local Southern California racist skinhead gang known as the Camarillo Storm Skinheads for hate crime violations in conjunction with a racist graffiti spree.

In August 2007, racist graffiti, including swastikas, began appearing in the Greenlawn Neighborhood of Camarillo, and later in another area east of Greenlawn. Investigators say they traced the graffiti back to suspect Matthew McCasland. McCasland is currently in custody awaiting trial for an unrelated March 2008, allegedly racially motivated, attack on an African-American male.

Four months later, authorities identified a second suspect, Patrick Berndston, who was a suspect in a similar graffiti case in another area of Camarillo. Authorities arrested Berndston in Santa Cruz in July 2008, and transported him back to Ventura County to face charges of hate crime violations for the racist graffiti.

The final suspect, James Croley, has allegedly been linked to vandalism at the Gan Camarillo Jewish Preschool.  Police responding to a disturbance call at Croley's home on July 4, 2008, discovered graffiti in his bedroom said to be similar to that found at the preschool. Croley was arrested for that alleged domestic disturbance and is currently being held on felony vandalism and criminal threats charges.
