White Supremacist Fugitive Captured in Florida

Posted: March 9, 2006

A white supremacist fugitive wanted in Michigan for allegedly raping his ex-girlfriend has been captured in Florida.

Joel Dufresne, wanted in Michigan on 21 counts of sexual assault, was hiding in Orange Park, Florida, before surrendering to U.S. Marshals on February 27, 2006, according to authorities.  “Reverend” Dufresne, a prominent member of the white supremacist Creativity Movement, allegedly raped his girlfriend multiple times before heading to Florida with the couple’s 14-month-old son.

The Creativity Movement collapsed after its leader, Matt Hale, was convicted of soliciting the murder of a federal judge in Chicago and sentenced to 40 years in prison in April 2005.  Dufresne, in cooperation with some Florida adherents, was actively engaged in trying to reorganize and re-establish the group.

U.S. Marshals said Dufresne was so dedicated to the Creativity Movement that he named his son after Matt Hale.

Dufresne will likely be extradited to Michigan to face sexual assault charges.
