California Racist Skinhead Guilty of Hate Crime Battery

Posted: September 24, 2009

A racist skinhead has pleaded guilty in Ventura County Superior Court to attacking an interracial couple at an Oak View gas station in July.

Matthew Schumacher, 27, a member of the Ventura-based racist Skinhead Dogs, pleaded guilty in early September 2009 to one count of battery as well as three enhancements: battery as a hate crime, battery carried out as part of gang activity, and battery committed by a felon; Schumacher has served time in prison for a drug-related conviction.  The enhancements elevated the battery charge from a misdemeanor to a felony.

On the morning of July 25, 2009, Schumacher, who reportedly has numerous white supremacist tattoos, assaulted a 25-year-old white male who was at a gas station with his African-American girlfriend.  Schumacher made racial slurs, then punched the man in the back of his head while he was pumping gas, knocking him to the ground.  Ojai Police Department deputies arrested Schumacher later that day.
