On June 23, 2003, Milam's brother in law, Justin Provance, was arrested in Modesto, California, for allegedly trying to smuggle methamphetamines to Milam through the mail. According to Sheriff's Department spokesman Tom Letras, Provance, 27, sent Milam a letter with the drug between "two pieces of paper that had been glued together."
Milam's white supremacist beliefs are literally written all over his face, which is tattooed with "Aryan Honor" over his eyebrows and a swastika on his neck.
Provance and Milam face charges of conspiracy to transport a controlled substance into jail. They could conceivably also face federal charges, as it is a federal offense to use the U.S. Postal Service to smuggle contraband into prisons.
Milam, 30, was being held at Stanislaus Safety Center since his arrest on January 11, 2003, for parole violation. Authorities suspect Milam was involved in the shooting death of forty-five-year-old William Wayne Lederle.
On January 7, 2003, Milam, along with Robert Dennis, 37, and James Amador, 27, intended to rob Lederle when they entered his trailer home in Empire, California, according to authorities. During the confrontation, Lederle was killed by gunshot wounds to the upper body.
