Viva Palestina: Supporting Hamas Under the Guise of Humanitarianism RULE Galloway's Visits to the U.S.

Posted: July 22, 2009

Introduction
Viva Palestina
Galloway's Visits to the U.S.
Viva Palestina US
George Galloway

After returning from Gaza as the leader of Viva Palestina, George Galloway went on three speaking tours around the United States between March and July. During these visits, Galloway regularly demonized Israel and voiced support for Palestinian resistance. He also encouraged his audiences to coordinate an American version of Viva Palestina, an effort that was subsequently organized by domestic anti-Israel groups and several regional Viva Palestina US chapters. The convoy, consisting of 200 American activists, visited Gaza in mid-July 2009.

In June and early July, Galloway gave more than 10 speeches in cities around the U.S. Many of these events were fundraisers for the Viva Palestina US convoy.

  • Overland Park, KS, July 2 – A Viva Palestina fundraiser event was organized by Citizens for Justice in the Middle East, the Kansas City chapter of Muslim American Society (MAS) Freedom Foundation and American Muslims for Palestine (AMP). During his speech, Galloway said that since the 1970s, "I was a signed-up member of the Palestinian resistance, and I will remain one until my dying breath."
  • New York, NY, June 22 – At a Viva Palestina US fundraiser event in Manhattan, Galloway announced that New York City Councilperson Charles Barron would participate in the convoy. (Barron and Galloway had held a small press conference earlier that day on the steps of City Hall to announce Barron's involvement.) During the event, Galloway bashed Israel's existence, describing it as an "enterprise [that] was based on a lie" and referring to early Zionists as "white colonialists."
  • DePaul University, IL, June 17 – Galloway alleged that Israel is an "apartheid" state and compared the situation in Gaza to the Nazi Holocaust, referring to Gaza as a "concentration camp" and accusing Israel of dropping "gas" on the Palestinians.

During his May visit, Galloway spoke at approximately 10 events, including at the seventh annual Al-Awda convention in Anaheim, California.

  • Anaheim, CA, May 23 During a keynote speech at the Al-Awda convention's dinner, Galloway tried to inspire Arab Americans in the crowd to participate in Viva Palestina US, noting that their involvement would signify to the Palestinian people that although Arab countries have "left you alone…the Arabs in America are with you all the way.
  • University of California, Irvine, May 21 – During his speech, Galloway denounced Israel as a racist state and compared its war against Hamas in Gaza to the Nazi Holocaust, including describing Gaza as a "concentration camp."  He argued that Zionism has debased "the Jewish people" and described the founders of Israel as "European settlers." He asked: "Why are you making the Palestinian people pay in 2009 for what European fascists did in 1941?" Galloway also called on "Jews in America today to stand up against the apartheid state of Israel." Galloway's appearance at UCI was part of a series of anti-Semitic and anti-Israel events organized by the Muslim Student Union called "Israel: The Politics of Genocide."
  • Berkeley, CA, May 20 During a speech at the Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, Galloway called on the audience to "reject the idea that Judaism equals Zionism." He referred to Israel as a "settler state" and an "apartheid state." He also denied the Jewish people's right to the land of Israel, arguing that Jews "made no biblical claim" to Israel and that "the only people entitled to Palestine are the Palestinians themselves." Galloway promoted Viva Palestina US and claimed that it will force the mainstream media to take notice and reassured the audience that they "won't get in trouble" if they partake in the convoy. The event was sponsored by the Middle East Children's Alliance and KPFA Radio.
  • University of New Orleans, May 19 Galloway condemned the summer 2006 Lebanon war accused Israel of using white phosphorous gas during its winter military operations in Gaza. He also spoke out against former president George W. Bush, calling him anti-Semitic and racist. The event was sponsored by New Orleans Louisiana Palestine Solidarity (NOLAPS) and the university chapter of General Union of Palestine Students.

Galloway's first speaking tour, from March 23-April 7, 2009, focused primarily on the European Viva Palestina convoy, as well as initiating efforts for an American convoy. The tour featured stops at several college campuses, including Columbia University, Rutgers University, Pennsylvania State University, University of Michigan-Dearborn and Florida Atlantic University.

Although Galloway had planned to visit Canada between March 30 and April 2, he was declared a persona non grata by the Canadian government and denied entry on the grounds that he had provided material support to Hamas. Galloway ultimately spoke to Canadian audiences in Toronto and Montréal via a video link from New York. During his U.S. appearances, Galloway capitalized on the fact that he was banned from Canada to further his opposition to Israel and Zionism, alleging on numerous occasions that "Canada has turned into an embassy of Netanyahu/Lieberman" and that he was banned because of the "Israel lobby."

  • Anaheim, CA, April 7 At a fundraising event organized by Al-Awda Galloway played down Hamas rocket attacks from Gaza, describing them as "homemade" and ineffective. He condemned Israel's new government, describing it as "fascist" and alleging that, "In any other time, [Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu and [Foreign Minister Avigdor] Lieberman would be wearing swastikas and jack boots."

Galloway also called for a one-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, charging, "Why don't we have one country from the river to the sea where Muslims, Christians and Jews live together under the law? Israel hasn't agreed to a two state solution so why should we?!"
  • Santa Clara, CA, April 5 Galloway condemned Israel's new government, arguing at an appearance at the Muslim Community Association that "Killers have been elected to the Israeli government… they have committed more war crimes on their own then any of the countries near them combined."

He also repeated the oft-asserted claim by anti-Israel individuals that Western support for Israel has enraged the "Islamic world" and led to terrorist attacks against the West. Galloway alleged, "The injustice that's been done to the Palestinian people is one of the central reasons for the crisis between the East and the West, between Muslim and non-Muslim… as we found on 9/11 and on 7/7 in Britain."
  • Florida Atlantic University, March 28 Galloway praised world leaders who have spoken out against Israel and responded to a question about which world leader would be best suited for the Palestinian people with, "The greatest Arab president is Hugo Chavez… The greatest Arab leaders are [Hassan] Nasrallah and [Marwan] Barghouti." He also stated that the only world leader who stands up for the Palestinian people is Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who repeatedly demonizes Israel and has called Israel a "fake regime" that "must be wiped off the map."
  • University of Michigan-Dearborn, March 27 Galloway stated that he opposes terrorism but asserted that he supports the right to "resist," declaring, "I am a supporter of the Palestinian people. I am a supporter of their right to resist."
  • Pennsylvania State University, March 25 Galloway condemned U.S. support for Israel, lamenting that "Every single missile [used in the recent Gaza offensive] was made in the United States and paid for by your tax dollars." He lambasted Israeli policies in Gaza and the economic blockade, describing Gaza as the "largest concentration camp on Earth."
  • Rutgers University, March 24 Galloway urged the crowd to organize a Viva Palestina convoy from the U.S., charging that, "They're [Gazans] not used to seeing the United States flag on anything except on the bombs and missiles that kill them. So let's put some American flags from you on things that can help them stay alive."
  • Columbia University, March 23Galloway spoke brazenly about giving material support to Hamas, a U.S.-designated terrorist organization, asserting "who else would you give it to if not the elected government?" When asked a question about engaging with Hamas, Galloway declared, "I am not a supporter of Hamas… but I long ago abandoned the idea that you could choose other people's representatives for them… the people elected Hamas." He also argued that Hamas is "not all that Islamic… Hamas is just a more militant nationalist organization" and should not be lumped together with other terrorist groups because Hamas "just wants to liberate its country; it has no other ambitions… it just wants to liberate its tiny piece of land from illegal and violent military occupation."

He mitigated Palestinian rocket attacks on Sderot by charging, "Next time you hear about a Palestinian throwing a rocket in an unguided almost certainly utterly militarily ineffective way at Sderot, pause to think that maybe it's because he's a refugee in a concentration camp for the last 60 years and Sderot is built on his land!"

Galloway frequently generalized when describing Israel and Jews, accusing Israelis of being willing to "kill, murder, assassinate, and wreak havoc and destruction" in the hope that the "Palestinian cause is somehow just going to fade away" and claiming that "Zionism has poisoned the well" and has "distorted the face of Jewish people," albeit acknowledging that there's still hope to "win American Jews to a good position."
