Anti-Semitic Harassment/Events

ADL recorded 613 cases of anti-Semitic harassment in 2008. Incidents include verbal attacks and slurs against Jewish individuals (or individuals perceived to be Jewish); anti-Semitism conveyed in written or electronic communications, including anti-Semitic cyberbullying; and anti-Semitic speeches, picketing, or events.
Expressions of political criticism of Israel are not included in this category. However, public expressions of anti-Israel sentiment that demonize Israelis and / or Jews, that deny Jews their right to self-determination in an independent state, or that equate Israel with the Nazi regime, are included.
A small but representative sample of such incidents, as well as a selection of anti-Semitic events, follows:
Alabama
- Bakersfield: A Nazi flag was hung from a flagpole on a High School campus. (January)
Arizona
- Phoenix: Death Head Hooligans, a neo-Nazi group, held a remembrance in event in honor of Adolf Hitler. (April)
- Phoenix: A Jewish family was subjected to anti-Semitic slurs and thrown objects by a group of drunken fans at a major league baseball game. (May)
- Phoenix: Oi! Fest!, a white power concert, was held by several white supremacist groups. (September)
Arkansas
- Russellville: White Revolution, a white supremacist group, held an event. (February)
- Colt: The Southern Alliance Rally was conducted by KKK groups. (July)
California
- Vacaville: A neo-Nazi pamphlet was distributed on the doorsteps of about 200 homes. (February)
- Woodland Hills: A Jewish home was defaced with numerous swastikas. (March)
- San Francisco: A Jewish High School student was harassed on a school bus by classmates who called him "Kike" and threw pennies at him. (March)
- San Francisco: Several notes were left at a synagogue with messages like "I hate Jews" and "F--- Jews." (March)
- Los Angeles: A Jewish student was harassed by classmates with anti-Semitic statements like, "You all should have been wiped out in the Holocaust," and "You should go to the oven." (April)
- Irvine: Anti-Semitic conspiracy theories were propounded at an anti-Israel event. (May)
- San Rafael: A leaflet was found containing caricatures of Jews and the phrase "Don't forget the Holocaust!!!! It was a good start, but there's plenty more work to be done!" (May)
- Sacramento: A Jewish student was harassed by a classmate with anti-Semitic phrases like, "Stupid Jew," "Anne skank," "Hitler was great," and "Hitler is my hero." (September)
- Sherman Oaks: A Jewish students was harassed by classmates who told her, "You f---ing Jew…we're going to kill all the f---ing Jews." (October)
Connecticut
- Waterbury: A Jewish individual was sent an email saying, "I can understand why good people of Europe let the Nazis slaughter the Jews, just like the IDF is slaughtering the Arabs." (April)
Florida
- Boca Raton: Jewish woman was called a "Christ killer" at a car dealership. (January)
- Largo: An unknown caller phoned a Jewish community organization and told the receptionist, "You people cause nothing but trouble in this world. Heil Hitler, I hope you die motherf---ers." (May)
- Cutler Bay: A Jewish individual was harassed by a neighbor and was called a "Jew bastard" and told "A good Jew is a dead Jew." (June)
- Palm Beach Gardens: A Jewish individual received a phone message saying, "Sieg heil, sieg heil, Jews are running the world and Hitler had the right idea by trying to kill them all." (August)
- Sarasota: A Jewish individual received an email saying, "Happy F---ing Rosh HaShanah you kike bastard." (October)
- Naples: A man involved in a traffic altercation was called a "f---ing Jew bastard." (November)
- Aventura: A synagogue received phone messages saying, "Hitler should have finished the job," and "The world would be better off without Jews." (December)
- Fort Lauderdale: A woman at an anti-Israel rally shouted at pro-Israel counter-protestors, "Go back to the ovens, you all need one big oven." (December)
Georgia
- Dalton: Handmade signs were left on the door of a synagogue, reading, "Stop killing innocents," "Israel: How many innocents will you kill…stop this cold blooded murder." (December)
Texas
- Houston: An Adolf Hitler celebration was held by a neo-Nazi group. (April)
Illinois
- Chicago: Anti-Semitic language was used by protestors outside a "Friends of the Israeli Defense Forces" dinner. (January)
- Illinois: A non-Jewish student at a Catholic school complained of routinely being called "Jew" by bullying classmates because of his dark skin and dark hair. (February)
- Chicago: The neo-Nazi American National Socialist Workers Party conducted a Hitler birthday celebration. (April)
- Chicago: Members of the neo-Nazi American National Socialist Workers Party demonstrated across the street from a lecture given by Elie Wiesel. (September)
- Illinois: A Jewish student was harassed by classmates, who said "Why don't you jump in the oven like all the other Jews did?" and "If I had it my way I would kill you and all the other Jews." (October)
Kentucky
- Pikeville: An event, including a cross-burning, was held by a racist and anti-Semitic group. (April)
- Dawson Springs: White power rally and music festival Nordic Fest was held. (May)
Maryland
- Baltimore: Two white supremacist groups conducted a hate music concert. (March)
- Elkridge: A neo-Nazi National Socialist Order of America held an event. (April)
- Cambridge: The neo-Nazi National Alliance distributed fliers to homes. (July)
- Timonium: Jamaat al-Muslimeen held an anti-Semitic conference. (August)
- Baltimore: A Jewish student was handed a noose by two other students. (December)
Massachusetts
- Boston: A Jewish college student received email containing such anti-Semitic comments as, "You fat ugly piece of sh-- Jew," and "God bless Hitler." (March)
- Boston: The local Israeli Consulate received threatening phone calls and messages including, "Disgusting nasty Jew whores…pick up your sh—and leave." (August)
Michigan
- Grand Rapids: A Jewish organization received phone messages saying, "Hey, I am coming for you people. I hope you all die." (July)
Mississippi
- Frontenac: The neo-Nazi National Socialist Movement protested outside a Jewish film festival. (June)
- Tupelo: A rally was organized by White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. (August)
- Louisville: A white supremacist rally was conducted by the Nationalist Movement. (October)
Missouri
- St. Louis: A white supremacist event was organized by Volksfront, a hate group. (August)
- Jefferson City: An anti-immigrant rally was conducted by about fifty neo-Nazis. Anti-Semitic rhetoric was voiced. (November)
New Hampshire
- Meredith: A Jewish student was bullied by a classmate who called him a "filthy Jew" and threatened to "shove him in a crematorium." (June).
New Jersey
- Howell: A Jewish man was verbally harassed, called a "F---ing Jew," and threatened with assault. (January)
- Lakewood: Two Jewish minors were confronted by a group and taunted with "Heil Hitler" and "You dirty Jew." (January)
- Woodbridge: A Jewish student was passed a note, which, when opened, contained only swastikas. (January)
- North Brunswick: Victim received a text message saying she is a Jew who should "burn in an oven." (January)
- New Jersey: A Jewish Community Center was threatened with arson. (February)
- Bridgewater: Classmates of a Jewish student posted an image of a swastika on the victim's MySpace page. (February)
- New Jersey: A victim's Facebook "wall" was defaced with a long anti-Semitic message, including "U Jew I'm gonna fry U in my oven…." (March)
- New Jersey: A Jewish individual received a phone message saying "I just want to let you know you're a f---ing psycho, you're full of sh--, you Jewish Bastard." (August)
New Mexico
- Albuquerque: A Jewish organization received a phone message saying, "Seig heil you filthy kikes, seig heil, six million more, six million more…" (July)
New York
- Manhattan: A Jewish student was bullied by another student who said, "Too bad Hitler is dead and he didn't kill you and your family." (January)
- Manhattan: Anti-Semitic language was employed by protestors outside the Israeli consulate. (January)
- Merrick: Jewish business received numerous threatening after-hours phone messages, including such comments as "Thank god for Hitler," "Jew Bitch," and "I want to thank Hitler for killing the Jews." (February)
- Manhattan: At a protest outside a "Friends of the Israeli Defense Forces" dinner, anti-Semitic allegations were made. (March)
- Manhattan: An anti-Israel rally at Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza contained anti-Semitic elements. (May)
- Manhattan: A rabbi received an email that threatened his synagogue with attacks by rockets, anthrax, explosives and shooting, and concluded "Death to all Jews and the state of Israel." (October)
- Brooklyn: A rabbi was harassed by animal-rights activists over a Jewish ritual called "Kaparos." (Oct.)
- Brooklyn: A Jewish family found a death-threat taped to their door. The note referred to their being Jewish. (December)
Ohio
- Lewisburg: The National Socialist Movement, a neo-Nazi group, conducted an event, which included a book burning. (March)
- Cleveland: A Jewish individual was harassed by a co-worker who displayed Nazi symbols and expressed admiration for the Waffen SS. (July)
- Cleveland: Anti-Semitic rhetoric expressed at Norman Finkelstein speech. (December)
Oregon
- Portland: Volksfront, a neo-Nazi group, held an event. (April)
- Eugene: Holocaust denier David Irving spoke at an event organized by the Pacifica Forum at Oregon State University. (June)
Pennsylvania
- Pennsylvania: A Jewish student was bullied by several classmates with phrases like, "Hitler is my hero," and "Jews killed Jesus." (March)
- Roxborough: A leaflet denying the Holocaust produced by a white supremacist organization was distributed to a block of houses. (April)
- Philadelphia: A Jewish individual received text messages saying, "You f---ing Jew bitch, Jesus Christ the son of God is going to get you." (October)
- Erdenheim: A Jewish person was harassed by a person who told her that Jews were responsible for the Wall Street meltdown and that "we've known since the beginning of time that the Jews are the problem." (November)
- Philadelphia: Fliers promoting a white supremacist and anti-Semitic group were posted on dozens of utility poles. (January)
- Philadelphia: Anti-Semitic language was employed by anti-Israel protestors. (January)
- Philadelphia: A Jewish individual reported his coworker repeatedly saluting him with the Nazi salute. (March)
Tennsessee
- Selmer: The KKK conducted an anti-immigration rally at a local courthouse; anti-Jewish conspiracy theories were propounded. (March)
- Knoxville: Neo-Nazis conducted a rally. (May)
Texas
- San Antonio: A man walking to a synagogue was harassed by a group of teens who said, "We hate you, Jew" and "We're going to kill you, Jew." (February)
- Houston: A crumpled Israeli flag defaced with threatening messages was left at the door of a synagogue. (March)
- Houston: Several Jewish institutions received bomb threats. (March)
- Buffalo: A rally and cross-burning were held by the United White Knights of the KKK. (May)
- Amarillo: Helium balloons emblazoned with swastikas were released into the air, and KKK fliers were distributed. (August)
- Dallas: Hammerfest 2008, a white supremacist hate rock concert, was held. (October)
- Houston: A Jewish student was bullied by classmates with anti-Semitic remarks and jokes. (December)
- San Antonio: A Jewish organization received a phone message saying that the Diary of Anne Frank was a forgery, and that hatred of Jews is caused by the way Jews behave. (December)
Virginia
- Dungannon: A KKK rally was conducted. (September)
- Suffolk: Fliers promoting racist and anti-Semitic rhetoric were distributed to neighborhood homes. (November)
Washington
- Washington: A prison inmate wrote and performed a song with lyrics about killing Jews. (May)
Washington D.C.
- Washington D.C.: A neo-Nazi group, the National Socialist Movement, conducted a rally. About 30 marchers carried flags with swastikas and chanted neo-Nazi slogans. (April)
- Washington D.C.: A neo-Nazi group inserted anti-Jewish leaflets into free newspapers and distributed them to approximately 40 people's lawns. (August)
West Virginia
- Nitro: KKK recruitment fliers were left at residences. (January)
