Youth for Western Civilization
Chapters
Posted: May 23, 2011
Youth for Western Civilization (YWC), initially founded in 2006, appears be active or have had a presence at over a dozen U.S. campuses nationwide. In some cases, YWC might have one active member who claims to represent the group on campus. As of April 2011, only three universities—Vanderbilt University in Tennessee, Liberty University in Virginia and Washington State University in Pullman—recognize YWC as an official student organization. YWC, however, describes certain schools as having an official chapter even if the school itself does not.
YWC no longer lists its chapters on the group's Web site. In 2009, the group listed Vanderbilt and Liberty, as well as American University in Washington, D.C.; Bentley College in Massachusetts; Elon University in North Carolina; Providence College in Rhode Island, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as having active chapters. At Providence, the school's student government actually voted not to recognize YWC as an official student organization in December 2009 but the chapter continues to participate in numerous activities. The University of North Carolina at one time recognized the YWC chapter, but by 2011 it was no longer listed as an official student organization. Bentley and Elon no longer appear to have active YWC chapters.
YWC also appears to have a presence at the University of Idaho; Boise State University in Idaho and the University of Rhode Island. Ten schools have YWC chapters listed on Facebook. In addition to the schools already mentioned, the Facebook pages include Arizona State University, Colorado State University, the University of Utah, the University of Connecticut-Storrs, and the College of William & Mary in Virginia. YWC also claims to have chapters in Canada and Australia.
Though it is difficult to determine the exact number of members in YWC chapters on campus, the group's "join" page on Facebook has nearly 1,600 members—made up of a mixture of students and non-students.
