The 64th UN General Assembly: Issues to Watch
Anti-Semitism
Posted: September 21, 2009
The explosion of anti-Semitic attacks in Europe, Latin America and elsewhere during the period of Israel's Operation in Gaza is of great concern. Anti-Semitic placards were prevalent at anti-Israel rallies. Attacks on Jews and Jewish institutions must be condemned and perpetrators prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. There can be no justification for anti-Semitic speech or action under the guise of criticism of Israel.
Heinous anti-Semitic caricatures are mainstays in government and opposition newspapers in the Arab and Muslim world, in countries with whom Israel has peace (notably Egypt), with those who are not overtly hostile towards Israel (many of the Gulf states) and those with whom Israel is in an antagonistic relationship (Syria etc.).
Real and sustained Arab-Israeli peace will only be possible when Jews and Judaism, Israel and Israelis, are not demonized using age-old anti-Semitic themes and images.
