Dear Madam Secretary:
I am writing to you to address the recent decision by our government to engage Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood in dialogue.
The desire and need to establish relationships with key players in the new Egyptian reality is understandable. Yet, I worry that the Brotherhood, which sometimes is described as a more moderate version of the old extremist brotherhood, continues to exhibit extremist tendencies toward Israel and Jews in general, and that our dialogue with it will give it undue legitimacy.
In that regard, if you continue to deem it important for America's interest to have these conversations, I urge you to focus on ensuring that the Brotherhood supports Egypt's peace treaty with Israel, lower the anti-Israel rhetoric that has long characterized the group, and end the anti-Semitism that has been so pervasive. Such a focus will alleviate some of the concerns that many of us have about this dialogue.
Thank you for your consideration and continued success in your endeavors.
