While the divestment movements have failed to register much practical successes, "divestment" became the most successful rallying cry for pro-Palestinian organizations in universities and among grass-roots activists in recent years.  The movements have succeeded in mobilizing supporters across the country who did not come from the obvious constituency of the pro-Palestinian camp.  It is likely that divestment initiatives at universities, city councils, corporation shareholder meetings, and among religious denominations will continue. 

An insight into the utility of such campaigns comes from U.S.-based Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) activist Will Youmans, who admits that the demand to divest from Israel has received "cold receptions from the universities petitioned" but still hails the campaign as extremely effective because of its ability to convey a message. According to Youmans, "many consider this more important than divestment itself." Another activist, Lauren Ray of the Democratic Solidarity Committee at University of Illinois said: "I don't think divestment will happen any time soon. But it's a good platform from which to bring attention to this issue, and, in a few years — who knows?"
