Anti-Israel Demonstrations Proliferate in Response to Flotilla Incident RULE May 31-June 1, 2010

The following is a sampling of the demonstrations that took place on May 31, 2010, and June 1, 2010:


June 1, 2010


  • Atlanta, GA: More than 100 demonstrators gathered outside the Israeli Consulate holding signs that read, "Holocaust in Gaza," "Free Palestine, Stop U.S. Funded Apartheid," "Tear Down the Apartheid Wall, Let Palestine Live" and "Israel Guilty of War Crime." The protest was organized by the Movement to End Israeli Apartheid-Georgia.

  • Boston, MA: Several dozen individuals protested outside the Israeli Consulate in Boston holding signs that read,"From the River to the Sea, Palestine Will be Free," "Victory Hamas Free Palestine" with a Hamas flag and "Boston Condemns Israeli Piracy and Murder." Demonstrators chanted, "Resistance is justified when people are occupied" and "Long live the Intifada."

  • Chicago, IL: Approximately 1000 demonstrators gathered outside the Israeli Consulate holding signs that read, "Stop Funding Israeli Apartheid," "Gaza Ghetto Genocide," "Starving Palestinians is Not a Jewish Value" and "Stop Israel's Slaughter in Gaza." Several demonstrators burned a homemade Israeli flag that featured a Star of David and a swastika. Kevin Clark, an International Solidarity Movement leader and Free Gaza Movement activist, promised that "despite the murders, despite the threats, we are continuing all the way to Gaza." Representatives from numerous groups attended the protest, including American Muslims for Palestine, ANSWER-Chicago, the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network, Jewish Voice for Peace and the International Socialist Organization.

  • Davis, CA: More than two dozen students gathered on the University of California, Davis, campus holding signs that read, "Boycott Israel," "Zionism is Terrorism" and "Israel =War Crimes." In an interview, one of the student organizers of the demonstration said that Israel's recent action will spur a movement to boycott, divest and sanction Israel, and described Zionism as similar to South African apartheid and a "racist political movement." The university's chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine organized the demonstration. 
  • Dearborn, MI: Several hundred demonstrators gathered outside Dearborn City Hall holding signs that read, "Boycott Apartheid Israel," "Stop Israeli Piracy; Stop Israeli Terror Now," "Our Tax Dollars Should Not Support Genocide," and "No More Money, No More Blood." Osama Siblani, the publisher of The Arab American News, a local bilingual newspaper, said to the crowd that "we're here to…protect against the Holocaust by the Zionists against the Palestinians." He also accused Israel of "crimes against humanity." The protest was organized by the Congress for Arab American Organizations in Michigan.

  • Louisville, KY: More than 60 demonstrators protested outside a speech by Israeli Consul General Daniel Kutner at the Jewish Community Center. Protesters waved Palestinian flags and held signs that read, "Israel Lunatics with Nukes" "End Israeli Apartheid" and "Israel Betrays Jewish Values." The protest was organized by the Louisville Committee for Peace in the Middle East and the University of Louisville chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine

  • New York, NY: Several hundred demonstrators gathered outside the Israeli Consulate holding signs that read, "Israeli Pirates Kill, Piracy," "Nuremberg Justice for Israeli War Criminals," "From the River to the Sea, Palestine Will be Free" and "Arrest Netanyahu for Piracy and Murder." Charles Barron, a New York City Councilman who previously participated in the pro-Hamas Viva Palestina convoy to Gaza, addressed the crowd and accused Israel of "murder," and of being one of the "biggest terrorists." He described Gaza as a "death camp" and called on the U.S. to condemn the Israeli raid and sanction Israel.  The protest was organized by Al-Awda-NY, Gaza Freedom March, Jewish Voice for Peace and American Muslims for Palestine.
  • Philadelphia, PA:
    Approximately 70 people gathered on JFK Boulevard holding signs that read, "Zionism is Terrorism," "Zionism is to Judaism as Nazism is to Christianity," "No More $ for Israeli Massacres," "Israeli Pirates Kill and U.S. Pays the Bill" and "AIPAC Owns Congress." The activists proceeded to march to the offices of The Philadelphia Inquirer to draw more attention to their "cause." Several Jewish anti-Zionists attended the protest and held signs affirming their Jewish identity while condemning Israeli policy, including signs that read, "Not In Our Name" and "This Jew Says End the Crimes, End the Occupation."  

May 31, 2010


  • Los Angeles, CA: Several hundred individuals demonstrated outside the Israeli Consulate chanting, "Occupation No More, Israel is a Fascist State" and held signs that read, "Israeli Pirates Kill, U.S. Pays the Bills" and "We Demand Justice for Occupied Gaza." The protest was organized by CODEPINK, Al-Awda and the Campaign to End Israeli Apartheid-Southern California.

  • San Francisco, CA: Several hundred demonstrators protested outside the Israeli Consulate and chanted "Long Live the Intifada." One protester held a sign that read, "The Holocaust is no Excuse for Israel's Brutality." The protest was organized by CODEPINK.

  • Washington, D.C.: A demonstration took place outside the Israeli Embassy and the White House. Protesters held signs accusing Israel of a "massacre," "piracy," "murder" and "apartheid." An Israeli flag with "bloody" handprints and an Israeli flag with the Star of David replaced by a swastika were also displayed. The demonstrators called for an end to U.S. aid for Israel and accused Israel of being a "terrorist state." The protest was organized by the ANSWER Coalition.
