Terrorist Communiqués Distributed via Al-Awda Listserve

Posted: August 15, 2007

Al-Awda distributed at least five communiqués from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) on its main listserve in July 2007. Nearly all of the communiqués expressed support for terrorist activity, extolling "martyrs," encouraging the "resistance," and detailing violence against Israeli troops.

  • July 16: Al-Awda posted a communiqué from the Martyr Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades, the PFLP's "military wing," denouncing Palestinian media reports that its members had surrendered weapons and rejected amnesty deals for fugitives, claiming that true "freedom fighters" seek no reprieve from the enemy.  It also stated that the group would "unequivocally refuse to lay down arms so long as there is an occupation squatting on our soil."  A PFLP press release criticizing Hamas was posted along with the communiqué.
  • July 13: Al-Awda posted a joint communiqué from the Mustafa Brigades and the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade claiming responsibility for a mortar shell attack near the Erez crossing between Gaza and Israel.  The statement reaffirmed the need to "confront the enemy with all our force and with our unity and determination" and concluded by praising the "virtuous martyrs," the "heroic wounded," and the "courageous prisoners."
  • July 13: Al-Awda posted a joint communiqué from the Mustafa Brigades and the Izzedeen al-Qassam Brigades taking credit for "assaulting and disabling a Zionist Humvee" at the Hawara checkpoint in the West Bank. The statement included a pledge to continue such attacks and concludes with: "Homeland or death! Victory or martyrdom!"
  • July 10: Al-Awda posted a PFLP communiqué in which the Mustafa Brigades claimed responsibility for an ambush against Israeli soldiers stationed near a camp in Nablus.  The statement urged continued resistance against Israel: "Let the fight continue and let all guns be pointed at the face of the enemy."

The distribution of these communiqués via the Al-Awda listserve serves as yet another example of Al-Awda's support for terrorism. While each post includes a disclaimer stating that they "represent the views of their authors and not necessarily those" of the organization, the listserve's settings state that all postings to require approval by a group moderator in order for them to be sent to list recipients. The recent PFLP statements were posted by Samia Saleh, whom Al-Awda has listed as a Washington, DC-area contact for its events.

Al-Awda's listserve has included postings from the PFLP since at least 2003. For example, in October 2003, Khaled Barakat, who has been affiliated with Al-Awda for several years, posted PFLP communiqués to Al-Awda's regional Ohio listserve under an alias inspired by the name of a PFLP terror cell. Like Al-Awda's main listserve, the Ohio list states that all postings require approval from the group moderator.
