Michael Scheuer: In His Own Words RULE On U.S. Support for Israel

Posted: April 3, 2009

On the "Israel Lobby"
On U.S. Support for Israel

Scheuer supports a "non-interventionist" foreign policy and therefore opposes U.S. involvement in Israeli policy and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on the grounds that it is not in the United States' best "national-security interest," interests that are of "life-and-death" importance. He rails against what he sees as the United States' increasing involvement in issues of "national-emotional interest," categorizing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as one such interest. He acknowledges that he does not care about Israel's survival.

Scheuer does not often criticize Israeli policy in and of itself. In fact, in an article during the recent Gaza conflict Scheuer wrote, "Now, there is no reason for Americans to be angry at Israel. Hamas is a nagging military threat to Israel, and Israel's leaders can defend their citizens in the manner they deem appropriate." And during the summer 2006 war in Lebanon, Scheuer wrote, "I think no one – least of all myself – will deny the basic truth that Israel has the right to defend itself."

In His Own Words:

  • "Ultimately we have to find a way to dissuade them [Muslim extremists] from focusing their anger on us and persuade them to focus their anger at what they themselves believe is the real enemy, the governments that govern them, oppress them, and Israel."

  • "Ultimately Israel is a country that is of no particular worth the United States."
  • "But for anyone to stand up in the United States and say that support for Israel doesn't hurt us in the Muslim world is to just defy reality."

-- Interview on CSPAN's Washington Journal, January 4, 2010

  • "To think that our support for Israel is not a negative in terms of our ability to defend ourselves is a fantasy… As long as we're supporting Israel, as long as Israel is using our pennies to kill Palestinians. It's not going to be a good thing for the U.S."
  • "My position is that we shouldn't care about Israel. We should make them grow up."

-- Doha Debates on the topic of "This House believes it's time for the U.S. to get tough on Israel," Georgetown University, March 25, 2009

  • "The only country I care about is the United States. I care not a whit whether or not Israel survives."
  • "I have no quarrel with Israel's actions…My criticism is not for Israel but for U.S. governments that have knowingly put America at risk on Israel's behalf."

-- Marching Toward Hell: America and Islam after Iraq, February, 2008

  • "I hope Israel flourishes; I just don't think it's worth an American life or an American dollar."
  • "We should have revisited the situation [U.S. support of Israel] after 1973 and not be the unqualified sole supporter of Israel at the moment…fighting wars that are not ours to fight."

-- Interview on HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher, September 21, 2007

  • "It is not remotely imaginable that Israel is a national-security interest of the United States that requires the U.S. government to unquestioningly endorse, fund, and arm all Israeli actions and thereby earn the same enmity Israel earns from a billion-plus Muslims."

-- "Madison's Warning and the Israel Lobby," July 25, 2006,
