Michael Scheuer: In His Own Words RULE On the "Israel Lobby"

On the "Israel Lobby"
On U.S. Support for Israel

Scheuer uses the term "Israel-firsters" to describe individuals he believes are more loyal to Israel than to the United States. He alleges that Israel and its American supporters are "Israel-firsters" who comprise a fiercely powerful "Israel lobby" that manipulates U.S. foreign policy and pressures the U.S. to fight wars in the Middle East that are detrimental to American interests. In recent months, he has focused on the issue of Iran and the U.S.'s concern over Iran's nuclear program, arguing that the "Israel lobby," in its continuing efforts to push Israeli interests, is pushing the U.S. to wage war against Iran.

Although Scheuer largely focuses on the pro-Israel lobby when describing his antipathy toward groups that lobby on behalf of foreign countries, he has also spoken out against other powerful lobby groups, arguing that lobbying on behalf of any foreign country's interests is "anti-American."

In His Own Words:

  • "There is indeed an identifiable fifth column of pro-Israel U.S. citizens -- I have described them here and elsewhere as Israel-Firsters -- who have consciously made Israel's survival and protection their first priority, and who see worth in America only to the extent that its resources and manpower can be exploited to protect and further the interests of Israel…"
  • "The Israel-Firsters help Israel suborn U.S. citizens to spy for Israel; they use their fortunes and political action organizations to buy U.S. politicians with campaign donations; and most of all they use their ready access to the media to disguise their own disloyalty by denigrating as anti-Semites or appeasers fellow citizens who dare to challenge them."

-- Response to "How to Talk about Israel" discussion board on, March 16, 2009

  • "At some point down the road, every U.S.-taxpayer-funded bomb, artillery shell, and bullet aimed at the Palestinians will yield Americans killed at the hands of al-Qaeda, its allies, or those it inspires in attacks launched in response to U.S. support for Israel. Those Americans will be killed because their political and media leaders – corrupted to the bone by AIPAC – have involved them in a religious war that threatens nothing vital to their country's principles or national security, their personal economic well-being, or their children's lives."

-- "Bringing the Arab-Israeli War Home,", January 5, 2009

  • "American Israel-firsters have long since dropped any pretense of loyalty to the United States and its genuine national interests. They have moved brazenly into the Israel first, last, and always camp."
  • "To be silenced by the slurs of the Israel-firsters is to ignominiously invite the end of American independence by subordinating U.S. interests to those of a foreign nation."

-- "Turning the Tables on the Israel-Firsters,", July 16, 2008

  • "The vicious attacks on the two scholars [Stephen Walt and John Mearsheimer, authors of The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy] by leading Americans in the media, politics, and academics – in effect, Americans savaging other Americans in favor of a foreign country – smacks of nothing so much…as a superbly executed and very successful Israeli covert political action campaign."
  • "These ["Israel-firsters" who criticized The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy] are all dangerous men who, in my judgment, are seeking to place de facto limitations on the First Amendment to protect the nation of their primary attachment."
  • "The report [the Iraq Study Group Report that affirmed U.S. support for Israel] thereby definitively formulated the long-unstated reality that Washington has surrendered control over the decision for war or peace in the Middle East to Israel's government of the day or any Muslim regime that chooses to attack Israel."
  • "The Israel-firsters' attempts to silence criticism by Americans of the manner in which their government conducts the U.S. relationship with Israel are now leading the U.S. lamb to the slaughter."
  • "I have never accepted and will forever reject the idea that to intensely dislike the nature of the relationship the U.S. government has fabricated with Israel, and to believe that relationship is not only a burden but a cancer on America's ability to protect its genuine national interests – which I do believe – equates to either anti-Semitism or a lack of American patriotism."

-- Marching Toward Hell: America and Islam after Iraq, February, 2008

  • "[Walt and Mearsheimer] should be credited for the courage they have had to actually present a paper on this subject. I hope they move on and do the Saudi lobby, which is probably more dangerous to the United States than the Israeli lobby."

-- Interview on NPR, April 21, 2006

  • "The elites demand that Americans believe there are no such things as Israel-suborned American-citizen spies stealing U.S. national security secrets, pro-Israel U.S. media publications routinely savaging any American questioning the perfect and eternal mesh of U.S. and Israeli interests, and U.S. politicians from Pelosi to McCain to DeLay to Rice groveling at AIPAC's annual conference, each willing to compromise U.S. security if they can garner pro-Israel votes and pockets stuffed with cash from pro-Israel contributions."
  • "The impact of your [Israel's] covert political action activities in America are all that you could have hoped for: Truth is negated, dissent is suppressed, and opponents are intimidated and defamed, and all this is done by prominent U.S. citizens. The only competitor you have is the Saudi lobby, an organization just as damaging as yours to genuine U.S. national interests."

-- "Does Israel Conduct Covert Action in America? You Bet it Does,", April 8, 2006

  • "Through magnificent lobbying efforts, suborning American citizens to serve as its spies, the negative impact of dual citizenship, and playing on unjustified U.S. feelings of guilt about the Holocaust – America and its allies, after all, utterly annihilated the Holocaust's perpetrators – Israel and its American supporters have made discussing the issue of Israel difficult and politically dangerous in the United States."

-- "Toward a Sensible Israel Policy,", March 22, 2005

  • "To some extent, the idea that the Holocaust Museum here in our country is another great ability [on the part of the Israel lobby] to somehow make people feel guilty about being the people who did the most to try to end the Holocaust. I find — I just find the whole debate in the United States unbearably restricted with the inability to factually discuss what goes on between [the U.S. and Israel]."
