On Evaluating Anti-Semitic Incidents

A total of 37 anti-Semitic assaults on Jewish individuals (or individuals thought to be Jewish) took place in the United States in 2008.  The assaults include attacks with baseball bats and B.B. guns, punching, and rock-throwing.  In some cases victims were hospitalized.  There were no anti-Semitic homicides.

The following is a list of selected anti-Semitic assaults in 2008:

Arizona

  • Prescott: A Jewish student was beaten up by a schoolmate after being asked if he was Jewish. (September)

California

  • San Francisco: A man wearing a necklace with a Star of David was punched and struck with an empty bottle by a group of attackers, one of whom yelled, "Get out of here you damn Jew!"  The man was not Jewish. (January)
  • Los Angeles:  Unknown assailants in a car attacked a group of Jewish minors, accompanied by one adult, with eggs and a paintball gun, as they walked near a synagogue. (February)
  • Log Angeles: A Jewish woman was assaulted by a woman who said, "You f—ing Jew, the Holocaust never happened."  (March)
  • Los Angeles: A Jewish man was attacked on the street by three assailants, who made anti-Semitic comments and robbed him. (March)
  • North Hollywood:  A Jewish man was assaulted by two men who shouted anti-Semitic slurs. (April)
  • Los Angeles:  A Jewish man was tripped by several assailants who grabbed his Kippah and made anti-Semitic comments. (July)
  • Valencia:  A Jewish boy was assaulted in a shopping mall by assailants who made anti-Jewish comments. (August)
  • Los Angeles:  A Jewish boy was punched by a schoolmate who said, "I hate Jews." (September)
  • Ukiah:  A Jewish boy was assaulted by several schoolmates after they taunted him about Adolf Hitler and the Holocaust. (December)

Connecticut

  • New Haven:  A group of Jewish boys were pelted with rocks as they walked on the Sabbath. (September)
  • New Haven:  A group of Jewish boys were attacked with rocks as they walked on a Jewish holiday. (October)

Florida

  • Miami Beach:  A rabbi, while walking on the street, was assaulted by an individual who made anti-Semitic comments. (July)
  • Boynton Beach:  A Jewish woman in an assisted-living facility was punched by an individual who made anti-Semitic comments. (October)
  • Coral Springs:  A Jewish man was assaulted by a neighbor who made anti-Semitic comments.  (November)

Georgia

  • Ft. Benning:  A Jewish soldier was the subject of anti-Semitic harassment and was beaten. (September)

Illinois

  • Chicago:  A Molotov cocktail was thrown at a synagogue. (December)

Michigan

  • Southfield: A Jewish man was attacked by six assailants who shouted anti-Semitic taunts as he walked to synagogue on the Sabbath. (July)

Nebraska

  • Omaha: A Jewish student was forced by classmates to draw a Jewish star on his face. (September)

New Jersey

  • Jackson: A Jewish man wearing Hassidic garb was punched in the face by a teen, while another teen took photos of the attack on his cellphone camera.  After they were apprehended by the police, the teens admitted ted that they had targeted the man because he was Jewish. (May)

New York

  • Brooklyn: A Jewish boy was beaten by a group of assailants who taunted him with comments like, "Get the Jew boy," "You dirty Jew," and "You f—ing Jew." (January)
  • Brooklyn: A Jewish man and his son were walking near their home when they were attacked by a heavily intoxicated man who yelled, "I hate f—ing Jews." (February)
  • Brooklyn: A Jewish inmate in Federal prison was attacked by other prisoners who made anti-Semitic remarks.  (February)
  • Port Washington: A Jewish individual was attacked with a B.B. Gun by an assailant who yelled anti-Semitic slurs. (March)
  • Brooklyn: A Jewish man was assaulted by two attackers who made anti-Semitic comments and grabbed his Kippah. (March)
  • Brooklyn: A Jewish man was attacked on the street by three assailants, who grabbed his Kippah, made anti-Semitic comments and punched him in the face. (March)
  • Brooklyn:  A Jewish man was assaulted by a group of attackers who made anti-Semitic comments. (April) 
  • Brooklyn: Two Jewish males were assaulted in a public park by a group of attackers who made anti-Semitic comments, including, "Hitler is going to kill you all." (May)
  • Brooklyn: Two Jewish men standing in front of a synagogue were attacked by three assailants who yelled, "F—ing Jews, get off our streets." (May)
  • Kiamesha Lake:  Four Jewish men were assaulted by a group of attackers in a parking lot. (August)

North Dakota

  • Grand Forks:  Two Jewish college students were shot at with a pellet gun by an assailant who shouted anti-Semitic slurs. (April)

Pennsylvania

  • Suburban Philadelphia: Jewish student was struck with a baseball bat by a group of students, one of whom described himself as "Hitler, coming to kill all the Jews." (January)
  • Philadelphia: Two Jewish college students were attacked by assailants who made anti-Semitic comments. (February)
